Rewilding the Senses
Bringing the human soul back into conscious relationship with nature.
Each thing or being we meet in nature, everything that we observe, has its own hidden existence. If we have the skills to perceive it, we are swept into a dynamic relationship, an understanding, where the creation mysteries of our world unfold, and where we potentially transform. We create a bridge between our rational intellectual mind and our inner world, and to the soul of the world, reshaping all of life toward holistic wellbeing and the birth of an ecological consciousness as a more sustainable world emerges.
Humanity seeks the unseen sacred within everyday life. Rewilding the Senses seeks to help individuals in their development of an ecological consciousness by extending our understanding and capabilities of sensory experience and perception as faculties for restoring our connection with the more-than-human world. A comprehensive set of sensory and cognitive practices are suggested. This book aims to inspire people to get back to the great outdoors and explore these ideas in nature. If we can change the way we experience the world, it evolves our personal consciousness, and dissolves boundaries—we experience ourselves as less and less separate from the web of life—restoring well-being not only for ourselves, but also for our planet.
Recovering the Wild Sacred
Large predatory animals are often vilified, demonized, and extirpated because historic and narrative fallacies integrate into societal and cultural memories. This happening can be seen as the evolution of an emergent process that takes place across generations. The archetypal and symbolic narrative of the historical extirpation of wolves in Yellowstone National Park is examined together with the 2,500-year-old myth of Gilgamesh, in which the protagonist undertakes a journey into the Cedar Forest to exterminate the creature, Humbaba. Through these two examples, using analysis and depth psychology—the study of the unconscious—Ms. Covi explores the consequences of unconscious archetypal energy, or universal patterns’ manifestation in the individual or society.
The Language of the Soul
The underlying unity that links us in the vastness of the cosmos often transcends empirical evidence. Because the direct understanding of the connection between our psyches and the natural world is elusive, this bond is frequently communicated through the language of the soul – symbolism.
